Hear from Helen Child about her experience of being in a Horse Racing Syndicate
In the first of a series of ‘behind the scenes’ articles, we interviewed Helen Child recently about what it’s like to be in a Nicky Richards Racing Syndicate. Helen joined the Red Cadillac racing syndicate last summer, and here’s what she had to say about her first year as a racehorse owner.
Have you always been interested in horse racing?
I’ve always loved horses and ridden since I was a child. I’ve a treasured photo of the first time I was in the saddle with my mother holding me in front of her – I must be about one. I fell in love with racing when I worked with Vodafone, way back when they sponsored the Epsom Derby – it’s only now I’ve the opportunity to get more involved.
Why did you think about getting involved with horse racing?
It had been on my bucket list for far too long. I’ve a couple of friends that own horses and one that was a jockey – it’s always fascinated me.
How did you learn about syndicates in racing?
I wanted to be involved, learn and start a journey of racehorse ownership. This was recommended as a fun, accessible entry point.
How did you learn about Nicky Richards racing?
Nicky Richards is a local legend! Need I say more…?
Why did you choose to buy a share in a horse with Nicky Richards?
In a word—Nicky. After spending a wonderful Saturday morning at his kitchen table, surrounded by photos of horses flying over fences, listening to him talk about the afternoon’s racing as we walked around the yard—I knew I’d be in expert hands. I quickly realised I had a lot to learn, and there was no one better to guide me.
Has being involved with a racing syndicate at Greystoke lived up to your expectations?
Exceeded them! It’s so much more fun standing at the track watching your own horse run than shouting at the TV at home. Being involved, you get surprisingly nervous before each race—just willing Red Cadillac and his jockey to come home safely. You simply don’t get that kind of feeling from watching ITV Racing.
What’s been the most enjoyable things about being a syndicate owner?
It’s been an entirely new experience for me – I’m loving it. It’s more than just a hobby—it’s an exhilarating experience. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of watching your horse thunder down the home straight and sharing that excitement with fellow owners, family and friends.
It’s not just about winning, you learn to be an eternal optimist — it’s about being part of a team. So much hard work happens behind the scenes. Huge credit has to go to the dedicated team, from those posting on social media to the yard staff out in all weathers, making it all possible. Thank you.
Above all, it’s the sheer privilege of being involved with these magnificent and beautiful athletes, and knowing you play a part in their story.
Have there been any disappointments in your syndicate ownership?
Hand on heart – none!
How would you describe going to the races to see your horse run? Are you looked after?
Great question—it brings back memories of some truly special days at the track.
Boxing Day at Sedgefield was spectacular: clear blue skies, everyone in festive spirits, and some fabulous hats. Other times, I’ve been quietly grateful for my ski thermals – Uttoxeter this year was bitterly cold, but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
I’ve even been on my own a few times, and I’ve always been made to feel incredibly welcome. You become part of a new family of like-minded enthusiasts – all of us riding the emotional rollercoaster together.
It’s more than just a day at the races – it’s being part of something special. And yes, you’re brilliantly looked after every step of the way.
Would you recommend syndicate ownership?
Yes! Don’t over think it, and don’t keep it on your to do list for as long as I did. It’s surprising easy to make happen. You’ll enjoy every furlong.
Would you recommend Nicky Richards racing to your friends and contacts?
Yes – I think I just have!
Is there anything else you would like to add about your syndicate ownership experiences?
Of course we all want to win. Every racehorse owner does. Trust the process and enjoy having the privilege of taking part in one of the most magnificent sports on earth.
